There are now more opportunities for African companies as the United Nations (UN) moves to actively increase its sources of supply from developing countries and countries with economies in transition.

The UN offers a huge market that comprises of six principal organs, 15 agencies and several programmes and bodies that procure many products and services.

In 2009, the United Nations Procurement Division (UNPD) purchased services and goods worth over $3-billion. Architecture, engineering and construction related services took up the lion’s share of the $3 488 416.446 worth of business, followed by air transportation services; chemical and petroleum products; freight forwarding and delivery services; and catering services.

Where to start

To do business in this lucrative market, you need to register your company as a vendor with the UNPD. If the application is successful you will receive a vendor number that qualifies your company to apply for tenders from the UN agencies.  Registration is free and can be performed online.

All types of businesses can register on the vendor roster that accommodates small to medium companies as well as big companies. Tenders can be worth millions of dollars, but your company must be able to supply quality services and practice good corporate governance.

The UN does business with vendors from all over the world and has actively increased its sources of supply from developing countries and countries with economies in transition.

You can register, access business opportunities and subscribe to the tender alert service here.
