Nando's currently only has outlets in Lagos but plans to expand across Nigeria with the first store in Abuja set to open later in the year.

Nando's, the Portuguese-themed outlet that specialises in chicken dishes, was founded in South Africa in 1987. It has since expanded to 26 countries across the globe, including Nigeria. Jaco Maritz asked Lawrence Rock, business development manager Africa, about the Nando’s operation in Nigeria.

What made Nando’s first decide to enter the Nigerian market?

Nando’s has been operating in Nigeria since early 2006. Being one of the bigger markets in Africa, Nigeria formed part of our African brand strategy expansion.

Nando’s currently only has outlets in Lagos; are there plans to expand to other cities in Nigeria?

Currently we only operate in Lagos but our first store in Abuja will open later this year. We are expanding at the rate that good sites come available as well as at a sustainable rate to grow our skills base of management.

How does the franchising aspect of the business in Nigeria work?

We have a master licensee for the brand who in turn has the ability to franchise the brand out in their territory. The franchising aspect is still early days in Nigeria and currently all outlets are owned by the master licensee, UAC plc.

How have sales been going in Nigeria thus far?

We have had our challenges in certain areas but we are happy with the trading results thus far.

Does the Nando's menu in Nigeria differ from other parts in the world?

There are slight differences in some of our side order offerings such as rice but the core offering is similar to the rest of the world.

How would you describe Nigeria’s fast food industry?

Young, unsophisticated but growing rapidly.
