Investment opportunity: Tomato juice and purée production.
Summary: Sokoto State Government is seeking investors for a Greenfield tomato juice and purée production. The investment will finance, construct and operate the facility. Tomatoes are grown in all local government areas of the state and are produced in large quantities on the irrigated Fadama land.
Sector: Agriculture is an important sector in Nigeria’s diversification program. The government sees the sector as one of the new growth areas, and is dominated by traditional small-scale farmers. Commercial farming is small and limited. In Sokoto, the agriculture sector employs 80% of the rural population. The state government is actively seeking investors to expand production and processing.
Incentives:
There are several initiatives aimed at attracting investment to the agriculture sector, including financial incentives (for companies processing food), subsidies (for farming equipment and fertiliser), and research initiatives into improved crop utilisation. Inadequate processing capacity is one of the key structural deficiencies in the agricultural economy. Consequently, investment in this sub-sector attracts pioneer status: tax holidays, tariff concessions, financing and export support.
