The Sokoto State Government is offering investors the opportunity to get involved in the small and medium scale mining of gypsum in the state. Opportunities for gypsum processing facilities also exist.

Gypsum is a calcium sulphate material of great commercial importance. It is found in sedimentary deposits, inter-bedded with shale and clay. Substantial gypsum deposits are found in Wurno, Gada, Dange and Tajaye in Sokoto State.

Market

The Cement Company of Northern Nigeria is currently the main buyer of gypsum in the state. The annual demand of raw gypsum by Nigeria's cement industry has been estimated at 230 000 tonnes per annum. With a number of new cement factories planned this amount is set to increase. About 70 000 tonnes of gypsum are currently being required for other uses.

Exploration

Although large deposits of gypsum have already been identified, many undiscovered deposits are believed to exist in Sokoto State.

Incentives

Together with the normal solid minerals incentives offered to investors in Nigeria, the Raw Materials Research and Development Council is offering subsidised feasibility studies and free technical information.
