The Sokoto State Government, through the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC), is inviting investors to partake in the mining and processing of limestone.

Limestone of the Kalambaina, Dange and Wurno formations are the best studied mineral in Sokoto State. A geological survey of Nigeria estimated that a reserve of 100 million tonnes of limestone exists in Kalambaina alone.

Physical properties of limestone

  • Specific gravity - 2.91
  • Refractive Index - 1.51
  • Moh's hardness - 3
  • Decomposition temp. - 600 – 900 °C
  • Brightness - 70 – 80

    Potential markets:

    1. Metallurgical: Steel making as flux, iron ore agglomeration, beneficiation of non ferrous metals, etc.
    2. Chemical: Manufacturing of caustic soda, fertiliser production, etc.
    3. Treatment Plant: Water and effluent treatment as a coagulating aid in pH correcting and softening of water.
    4. Pulp and Paper: Customising, sodium carbonate solution, pulp digestion and leaching.
    5. Construction: Protective coating, white wash, masonry mortar, etc.
    6. Agriculture: Soil neutralisation and stabilisation, etc.
