Local and foreign investors have the opportunity to invest in rice processing industries in Sokoto State, situated in north-west Nigeria.

Rice is one of Sokoto State's most important crops and grown on the flood plains found in the Wurno, Goronyo, Kware, Binji, Rabah and Gwadabawa local government areas. A high yield is obtained in both the rainy and the dry season through irrigation farming with an estimated 50 000 tonnes produced annually.

Investment opportunities exist in rice dehusking and processing into various products. Establishing industries will boost the production of paddy rice and will discourage importation. Other potential investments opportunities lie in the production of industrial starch and rice flour.

Reasons to invest in Sokoto State:

Availability of affordable labour: Sokoto State has an abundant supply of affordable skilled and unskilled labour.

Incentives: The Sokoto State Government is willing to extend a number of incentives to serious investors. These include the provision of land and infrastructure, tax holidays and assistance with obtaining financing.

Market: Nigeria, with its population of close to 150 million provides a massive market for rice and its related products. The country also enjoys favourable trade arrangements with the ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) region.

Stable political climate: Since its return to civilian rule in 1999 Nigeria has made significant gains in establishing democracy. Besides a few localised problems in the Niger Delta area, the country is safe and secure to do business.
