Local and foreign companies have the opportunity to get involved in the production, processing and marketing of herbs and spices in Sokoto State, situated in north-west Nigeria.

Investment Opportunities

The market for herbs and spices can be divided into four segments. These are: culinary uses including fresh and dried powdered products, medicine and supplement applications, essential oils, and pharmaceuticals.

Global trends toward healthier lifestyles have resulted in a tremendous expansion in demand for herbs and spices. As a result, there are lucrative opportunities for investors who wish to invest in the production of any exportable herbs and spices.

Sokoto State's climate is suitable for the cultivation of various fruits and plants used in the production of herbs and spices. Most crops in the state are grown on the floodplains of the Sokoto-Rima river system which are covered with rich alluvial soil. Crops such as millet, guinea corn, maize, rice, beans, wheat, cassava, potatoes, groundnut, cotton, sugar cane, and tobacco are cultivated in this area. Various fruit and vegetables are also grown here. The state also has an abundant supply of workers for this labour intensive industry.

Incentives

The state government has put in place a package of incentives to attract genuine investors. These incentives are designed to promote investment, employment, sourcing raw materials and various vital issues pertaining to the setting up of industries in the state. They are the following:

  • Provision of adequate industrial infrastructure such as access roads, electricity, water and telecommunications facilities, etc.
  • Easy land acquisition
  • Equity participation in viable projects
  • Granting of loan facilities
  • Tax holiday of at least five years
