Investment opportunity: Transport services

Location: Ilorin

Summary: The Kwara State Government is offering an opportunity to invest in transportation. There is a great need for a reliable and efficient transport service within the state capital Ilorin, and to other destinations in Nigeria. The project will involve the construction of a bus terminus and maintenance workshops; the procurement of a fleet of buses; and operation of the service.

Incentives: Assistance with loans, tax holidays and the provision of land.

Sector: Road conditions in Kwara State have improved in recent years, as the government has made road development one of the priorities. While great progress has been made in the urban areas, the same cannot be said of rural areas where agriculture is the main economic activity. The state government acknowledges the importance of farmers to reach urban markets and the need to keep pace with urbanisation. Massive rehabilitation of roads in each of the 16 local government areas has been undertaken or is planned. The Kwara State Transport Corporation is responsible for mapping out strategies for improved intra and inter-city transport services.  To further strengthen the transportation network and link the urban centres with the rural areas, the government is boosting the transport sector by introducing a mass transit system to complement the decreasing investment by the private sector. Kwara State is situated in central Nigeria and relatively close to Lagos and Abuja. The cargo terminal at the Ilorin International Airport and the progress in establishing commercial farming activities will further increase the transportation needs of the population, which is growing rapidly.
