The Zamfara State government has allocated N48-million to educate farmers on modern farming techniques.
According to the state’s commissioner for agriculture Alhaji Abdulsalam Magami, more than 1 200 workers will receive training before the commencement of the rainy season.
The commissioner identified sesame production as an especially viable commercial industry and that training will focus on production of the commodity.
Research conducted by the state has shown that sesame started to grow wherever millet was planted.
Sesame is grown primarily for its oil-rich seeds, which come in a variety of colors, from cream-white to charcoal-black. It is added to breads, sweet confections and various other food products. Sesame can be planted twice a year and harvested between 80 and 90 days.
