A N95-million mini brown sugar plant, designed and built by the National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion (NOTAP), has been inaugurated in Anambra State.
The plant has the capacity to crush 10 tonnes of sugar daily.
Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, said the plant is part of his administration's efforts to industrialise the state through small and medium enterprises.
Minister of science and technology, Grace Ekpiwhre said she is optimistic that the project will stimulate further economic activity in the state.
According to David Okongwu, director-general of the NOTAP, N45-million was spent on construction works, training of farmers, planting materials and a 100 KVA generating set. Another N50-million went to the machinery necessary to crush the sugar cane.
Okonhwu added that the plant also has the potential to produce ethanol, animal feeds, chipboard and biogas for electricity generation.
