The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) has called on Nigeria to revive that country’s ailing textile industry, reports the Guardian.
The textile industry, which has been in decline in recent years, could provide employment and stimulate growth in other sectors. “The textile industry is unique because it has a high percentage of locally produced raw materials such as cotton and polyester,” said UNIDO in a statement on Friday.
Revitalising the textile industry could also lessen Nigeria’s dependence on oil as a source of foreign revenue during a period when global oil prices remain depressed.
