Nigeria spends N6-billion per year to import wheat, Dr Abba Ruma Sayyadi, Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources has revealed.
According to the minister the country needs to considerably increase wheat production before it can stop imports. Nigeria consumes around 15-million tonnes of wheat annually.
Statistics also show that Nigeria consumes large quantities of rice, sugar, maize and cassava. The country's annual sugar consumption is more than 1.2-million tonnes but only 200 000 tonnes are produced locally.
Sayyadi said that the government is aiming to make Nigeria self-sufficient in the production of these items within the next four years. He believes that Nigeria has the potential and human capital to achieve this.
