A solar cells factory is going to be constructed in Karshi, Abuja with the help of Chinese technicians.

Photovoltaic (PV) cells convert solar energy into electricity and can be made from low cost environmentally friendly materials.

Prof. Olusegun Adewoye, director general of the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), said the idea is to make solar energy components affordable in Nigeria.

NASENI, the Sheda Science and Technology Complex and the Obafemi Awolowo University are currently busy with research and development activities in the field of conducting polymers (CPs) because of its potential for use in electronics and opto-electronic applications.

The minister of state for science and technology, Alhassan Bako Zaku, said it should not be necessary for Nigeria to import simple components such as cells. He added that NASENI should also aim to create agri-processing machinery that require no electricity.
