The Edo State government has expressed an interest in inviting Zimbabwean farmers to start with commercial agriculture in the state.
A group of Zimbabwean farmers who lost their farms due to Zimbabwe's land reform process have been operating in Kwara State for the past two years. They are engaged in a range of activities including dairy, chickens and cultivating crops such as cassava, soya beans, maize and rice.
Each of the farmers in Edo State will require a thousand hectares of land. Uwa Osunbor, special advisor to the Edo State governor on farm development, said representatives of the Zimbabwean farmers already had a look at sites in the northern part of the state.
According to Osunbar, Etsako West and Etsako Central local government areas are good for rice farming, while Uhunmwode and Uromi are suitable for oranges and pineapples.
She added that the arrangement will have an agri-processing and export component. The project will also have a strong focus on technology transfer from the Zimbabwean farmers to locals.
