A memorandum of understanding that would ultimately improve the potentials of aquaculture for the purpose of achieving food security in Lagos had been signed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives and the University of Lagos.
Vice Chancellor, University of Lagos, Prof Tolu Odugbemi described as "laudable" the Marine Aquaculture Development Programme of the present administration of Governor Babatunde Fashola and the bid to optimise the abundant aquatic ecosystem in the state to increase fish production through a commercial cage and pen culture system.
According to Prof Odugbemi, aquaculture "has the potential to supply the national fish requirement if properly harnessed".
He said that the choice of the University of Lagos lagoon front for the establishment of a commercial cage culture system is an interventional move that would assist in the areas of capacity building, academic training and research.
Prof Odugbemi was represented at the occasion by the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academics and Research, Prof Modupe Ogunlesi.
