Nigeria tops African countries as a source of tourists for South Africa, says South Africa Tourism (SAT).

Arrival figures have been increasing since 2004 and in 2009, a total of 45 527 Nigerians visited South Africa, mostly for business. SAT has now launched a campaign to encourage more Nigerians to visit South Africa, even after the FIFA World Cup in June.

“Nigeria is an important market for our country and these arrivals are encouraging and show a sound return on investment in marketing activities in Nigeria,” says SA Tourism’s Regional Director, Africa and Domestic Markets, Phumi Dhlomo.

Last year South Africa unveiled marketing initiatives in Nigeria using the FIFA World Cup as a draw card to encourage more Nigerians to visit South Africa, not only for business but also for leisure.

“Visitors from Nigeria represent a significant business and tourism source market for South Africa. We are looking at growing the numbers and building stronger relationships for the mutual benefit of the two destinations,” says Hloni Pitso, Trade Relations Manager, West Africa for South African Tourism.

SAT officials were in Lagos for a trade workshop aimed at promoting South Africa tourism.
