Lagos-based Western Gold Fields has concluded plans to establish a power plant at Obollo-Afor in the Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State.

The plant will generate 1 000 mega watts of power using coal. According to Philip Pereira, chairman of Western Gold Fields, drilling of around 3 million tonnes of coal will start from 6 June.

The company is partnering with the Institute of Remote Sensing Applications, a Chinese academy of sciences in hyper spectral remote sensing. Hyper spectral remote sensing is used to acquire digital imagery of earth materials.

Enugu State Governor, Sullivan Chime said that the state has huge coal deposits but that these are largely underutilised and neglected.

Western Gold Fields has secured licences to establish similar power plants in Kogi, Anambra, Delta and Benue States.
