In what has been described as the largest municipal highway project in Africa, a 150 kilometre, six lane ring road is going to be constructed around Port Harcourt.
Representatives from Africa Finance Corporation, its partner ICMG Securities and China Harbour and Engineering Company singed a memorandum of understanding for the project.
Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi said that infrastructure development, employment creation and the growth of the economy are key to solving the crisis in the Niger-Delta region. The Governor sees the ring road project as one of the ways to achieve these goals.
Amaechi added that the Rivers State Government will do everything in its power to guarantee the safety of Chinese construction workers on the project.
A technical training institute will be established to ensure knowledge is transferred to local Nigerian workers during construction of the ring road.
