General overview of Sokoto State

Posted on: Fri, 18 Apr 2008

Sokoto State is situated in the north-west of Nigeria and shares its borders with Niger Republic to the west and north, Zamfara State to the east and Kebbi State to the south. It is essentially an agricultural state with 90% of the population engaged in subsistence farming.

The state's lifeline for growing crops is the floodplains of the Sokoto-Rima river system which are covered with rich alluvial soil. The Sokoto river is an important source for irrigation as well as a means of transport. Crops such as millet, guinea corn, maize, rice, beans, wheat, cassava, potatoes, groundnut, cotton, sugar cane, and tobacco are cultivated in this area. Various fruit and vegetables are also grown here. The rest of Sokoto State is generally dry and allows few crops besides millet, rice, corn and beans.

Livestock production is a major activity in the region. There are an estimated 15 million heads of livestock - including cattle, camel, sheep and goats - making the state the second largest in Nigeria regarding the production of livestock. State government encourages the development of the livestock industry by providing good pastures for grazing and efficient animal healthcare services.

Agro-industrial industries are prominent in Sokoto State. These include those for wheat flour processing, wheat handling, tomato processing and textile production. Other companies include the Sokoto Cement Company and Sokoto Soft Drinks factory. The state is also one of the major suppliers of leather to the world market.

In pursuance of its industrialisation policy, state government is putting in a lot of effort to encourage foreign and local entrepreneurs to invest in the industrial development of the region.
