Ghana has received its first volume of gas from the West Africa Gas Pipeline (WAGP) project.
The 678 kilometre pipeline is designed to move natural gas from Nigeria to Benin Republic, Togo and Ghana. It is estimated that the pipeline will enable Benin, Togo and Ghana to save around US$600-million in energy costs over a 20 year period. Ghana has calculated that it will save around 25 000 barrels of crude oil per day through using the pipeline's gas to run its power plants.
Ghana president John Kufuor said the WAGP will ensure that Ghanaians receive better value for their money.
