The operation and maintenance of six of Nigeria's major airports are going to be handed over to private investors in a public private partnership arrangement.

According to newspaper reports, the operational arrangements for the six airports will not be the same, as some are more lucrative than others.

The six airports are:

  • Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos
  • Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano
  • Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja
  • Calabar Airport
  • Port Harcourt International Airport
  • Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu

While the federal government is likely to retain a stake in the strategic airports, it is rumoured that some state governments have expressed an interest in the operation of their respective airports.

It is expected that the handing over of the airports to private investors will improve maintenance, although users might have to pay more.

Further details about the privatisation are unclear as government is still busy discussing the private sector participation.
