Nigeria's federal government has finalised plans for the establishment of a Niger Delta Tourism Development Initiative.

Prince Adetokumbo Kayode, minister of tourism, culture and national orientation, said government is using tourism as one of the ways of promoting peace in the troubled region.

The project is also supported by the vice president of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and a few oil companies.

Regarding other plans for tourism, Kayode added that his department is going to get involved with sports tourism throughout the country and that partnerships with the National Sport Commission and the Team Nigeria Trust Fund have already been established.

A Tourism Resort Development Project will also develop amusement parks in Nigeria in order to encourage leisure tourism. Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt will be the main focus points of this project.
