Viva Methanol Limited, Eurochem Corporation's Nigerian subsidiary, is going to establish the world's biggest methanol plant in the Lagos Free Trade Zone.
According to Mohan Vaswani, Viva Methanol Limited chairman, the plant will produce 10 000 metric tonnes of methanol per day – making it the largest of its kind in the world. With the help of UOP technology, methanol will be converted to high-quality olefins.
The company expects to produce an annual amount of 1.3-million metric tonnes of propylene and ethylene for the production of polyethylene and polypropylene, which are used make plastics, carpeting, and films, amongst other products.
Methanol-to-olefins technology will allow the company to use natural gas, rather than the more expensive crude oil derived feed stock, to produce olefins.
The plant is expected to start with operations in 2012.
