Nigeria's federal government has started with plans to ensure the 48-hour clearance of goods at Nigerian ports.

A committee comprised of seventeen members has been established to oversee the process. The body is chaired by the minister of finance and co-chaired by the minister of transportation.

Minister of finance, Shamsuddeen Usman, said that the country's ports have been described as inefficient, bureaucratic and corrupt and that the federal government is committed to addressing these issues.

The tasks of the committee will be the following:

  • to examine and review the adequacy of existing infrastructure in and around ports and to make appropriate recommendations;
  • to review current documentation processes and procedures and to make recommendations that will ensure the realisation of the 48-hour target;
  • to examine and review current port charges;
  • to examine and review the use of information technology in the overall cargo clearance process; and
  • to examine and review the procedure of the registration and licensing of customs agents and to recommend any necessary amendments.
