Nigerian president, Umaru Yar'Adua yesterday gave his support to local airline Arik Air, saying the federal government will do anything in its power to make sure the airline is a success.
Yar'Adua was represented by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Alhaji Yayale Ahmed at a ceremony marking the second anniversary of the airline and the reception of its new Airbus A340-500 aircraft.
Ahmed said that Arik Air has had a positive effect on Nigeria's image internationally.
Managing Director of Arik Air, Mike McTighe said the new aircraft will be used on the airline's intercontinental routes. Arik Air has recently announced flights from Lagos to London and New York.
Arik Air Chairman, Joseph Arumemi-Johnson said HSBC and Union Bank of Nigeria provided the financing for the aircraft as well as two additional units due for delivery in a few weeks time.
