The Kwara State Ministry of Works and Transport is committed to rebuilding and maintaining the state's road network.
A good road network is without a doubt a critical ingredient in the development efforts of any nation. Without it there can be no meaningful socio-economic progress. This is why the administration of Bukola Saraki, executive governor of Kwara State, right from the onset, made road development in all nooks and crannies of the state one its priorities. And true to its vow, apart from probably agriculture, education and health, no sector has attracted the attention of the government more than road development in the past three years.
It should be recalled that at the inception, the state of roads all over the state could safely be described as deplorable. The state government immediately embarked on the massive rehabilitation of roads in all parts of the state. Currently there is at least one major project by the state government in each of the 16 local government areas.
In addition to massive road reconstruction and rehabilitation, bridges were also constructed on existing roads which had become impassable. Also in an effort to enhance security and beautify the city roads, street lights were provided. Some of these street lights have been completed while others are still under construction.
The management of the Kwara State Transport Corporation was given the needed support and encouragement to map out strategies for improved intra and inter-city transport services. During this period, fourteen vehicles were refurbished while the corporation was encouraged to discharge its social responsibility effectively by serving as a check on arbitrary increase transport fares by other commercial transport operators. The Kwara State government guaranteed a loan given to the corporation by a commercial bank to purchase new vehicles to further boost transport services within and outside the state.
In order to further strengthen the transportation network in Kwara State and link the urban centres with the rural areas, the state has decided to improve the transport sector by introducing the a mass transit system to complement the dwindling efforts of private transporters who have found it very difficult to maintain and replace their vehicles.
Nigeria delivers a world class cargo hub
Nigeria has developed a world class cargo hub operating from Ilorin International Airport. Whilst some parts of Africa are struggling with the most basic infrastructural challenges, the airport is at the heart of a cargo revolution in Africa.
Ilorin International Airport has been re-designated and equipped as a specialist cargo airport. It has a cargo import handling capacity and a brand new cargo terminal has been constructed. The airport also has a 3110 m runway and no airfield or noise restrictions. Uniquely, it is open 24 hours a day with customs and immigration services always available.
Furthermore, it houses a new state-of-the-art passenger terminal opened by President Olusegun Obasanjo in June 2006 which provides world class facilities and a seamless airport experience.
Astra Aviation, a UK and African cargo specialist, has been appointed to project manage delivery of Ilorin International Airport’s cargo functionality ensuring strict adherence to the highest standards in quality, safety and security.
