A Presidential Committee for the Accelerated Expansion of Nigeria's Power Infrastructure has been established by President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua.

The committee has been set a target of delivering an additional 6 000 megawatts of electricity within the next 18 months. The plan will be driven by the private sector.

Olusegun Adeniyi, special advisor to the president on communications, said that the committee's mandate also includes adding an extra 11 000 megawatts of power through diverse sources by 2011.

The committee is expected to:

  • conduct a independent technical, financial and legal audit of Nigeria's power infrastructure;
  • find funding for the completion of ongoing NIPP projects;
  • provide input for the design of a securitisation structure to attract investors; and
  • provide input for a power purchase agreement that will give investors a reasonable return on their investments and will ensure affordable tariffs for customers.
