The company is jointly owned by the state and private investors.

Governor Peter Obi said his administration is committed to supporting Orient Petroleum in becoming Nigeria's first private refinery.

On completion, the project is expected to:

  • provide employment opportunities
  • raise Anambra State to oil producing status
  • stimulate infrastructural development
  • bolster the state and national economy

Actual refining activities are expected to commence in 2009.
