China and South Korea to upgrade Nigerian railways
Tue, 20 Nov 2007 00:00

The China Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC) has already commenced with the rebuilding of the network between Lagos and Kano. Around 50 000 locals will work on designing, constructing and maintaining the 1 315 kilometre line.

A US$2.5-billion loan, recently given to Nigeria by China, is expected to be used for the project.

South Korea is handling the second phase of the project which will entail a line between Port Harcourt and Jos. Nigeria is to receive low interest loans from the Koreans in exchange for a stake in an oil field.

The NRC has a network of 3 505 kilometres, stretching across nine states. Poor management and maintenance has led to an almost total meltdown of services.
