Review of Mining Act on the way

Posted on: Wed, 21 Nov 2007

The review of the Act will focus on protecting the environment from the damage done by mining companies and will also look after the interests of locals living in mining areas.

Twenty senators presented a motion that raised alarm about the environmental degradation caused by the federal government's new solid minerals policy. Mining activities were blamed for the deterioration of farmland, forests and grazing lands.

The senators also stated that the government is not sensitive to the interests of communities that live in mining areas, and said that a similar situation such as the one in the Niger Delta could be created if the government does not take action.

According to the senators, the following states are affected: Plateau, Enugu, Bauchi, Nasarawa, Kaduna, Kogi, Zamfara, Yobe, Gombe, Kano, Niger, Sokoto and Benue.
